## Should You Collect Bee Swarms?
As beekeepers, everyone must decide whether or not to collect bee swarms, but here at **Goldendrops Bee Farm**, we have chosen **not to** for several key reasons:
### 1. **Lack of Time**
When bees swarm, it’s usually a busy time for beekeepers. At Goldendrops, we already have a lot of work on our hands, managing our hives, checking the health of our colonies, and making sure our bees are producing high-quality honey. Collecting swarms requires time and attention, and unfortunately, we just don't have the extra hours to dedicate to it.
### 2. **False Alarm**
A common issue with swarm calls is the **false alarm**. Often, people believe they have found a swarm of bees, only to discover that they are not honey bees at all – but wasps or bumblebees instead. Misidentifying the insects is very common, and in many cases, it turns out that it's simply not worth the effort to collect them.
### 3. **Costs**
Collecting a bee colony comes with its own set of costs. Traveling to the location to collect the swarm, replacing the queen, and maintaining the colony once it’s been relocated – all these steps add up. In many cases, the cost exceeds the potential value of the colony itself. For us, it doesn’t make financial sense to invest so much time and money into collecting swarms, especially when we have established, thriving colonies at our own apiary.
### 4. **Health Reasons**
This is perhaps the most important reason why we do not collect swarming bees. Bees that swarm often take a portion of their stored food with them. If the original colony was carrying diseases, viruses, or bacteria, we risk introducing those harmful pathogens to our apiary. This can cause infection in our hives, which is something we cannot afford. Protecting the health of our bees and maintaining a disease-free environment is paramount to us.

### Conclusion
While collecting bee swarms may seem like a noble endeavor, at **Goldendrops Bee Farm**, we believe it's essential to weigh the benefits and risks carefully. For us, it's not just about adding to our colonies, but also ensuring the overall health and sustainability of our apiary.
