Why we do not sell queen bees on a mass scale
Goldendrops apiary has been breeding queen bees for over 25 years. Over that time we have gained experience but also reached conclusions that are not always convenient for the market. One of them is simple. Honest queen bee breeding in the UK often cannot compete on price with businesses that claim to breed queens but in reality only trade them.
Why price competition is unrealistic
This is not about quality or know how. The problem lies in the business model.
Many so called breeders in the UK operate as follows
They accept orders for any number of mated queens They promise delivery within about two weeks They deliver queens that are not their own breeding
How do we know these are imported queens
These are not assumptions. They are facts that can be verified.
1 Real breeding always starts with virgin queens Any genuine breeding operation produces virgin queens first. This requires time facilities and real work. Many sellers offer only mated queens which is a clear warning sign.
2 Unrealistic delivery times Offering unlimited numbers of mated queens with very short lead times is biologically unrealistic under UK conditions.
3 Official distributors of foreign breeders If you visit the websites of established queen breeders in Germany or Ukraine you will often find the same UK sellers listed there as official distributors for the UK market.
Importing queens is legal. The issue arises when imported queens are sold as if they were bred locally.
Queen bee rankings and reviews
In this situation online rankings and polls about who has the best queens are misleading. If most sellers source queens from the same breeders abroad the comparison is meaningless. The difference is often only the label and the price.
Why imported queens are cheaper
Breeding queen bees in the UK involves
Climate limitations Labour costs Biological constraints Infrastructure such as mating nuclei and selection colonies
Importers do not carry these costs. That is why they can sell queens below the realistic cost of local breeding.
Our approach at Goldendrops
We have made a conscious decision
We breed queens primarily for our own needs We sell surplus only when it is genuinely available On prior order we can produce virtually any number of virgin queens
Our limiting factor is mating nuclei. We operate 300 mating nuclei which is sufficient for our scale and for honest controlled production.
We are not focused on mass sales. We focus on transparency biology and fairness towards beekeepers.
